An Electrifying Anagram!

Last week I did my first of what I hope will be occasional, ongoing picture quizzes----if I can figure out a way to make them "psychometrically" valid.

Actually that isn't really as important as everyone having fun and learning something----myself included.

I expect that the inspectors out there will have the most fun with this one as it is on the overly "technical" side.  I think everyone else should give it a go too-----and at least you can get a sense of what inspectors do.

This time there are "five" pictures that have a "best" match in the set of "nine" pictures that follows.  The interesting thing about this quiz that is BETTER than the previous one is that the correct answers form an interesting anagram that is consistent with life----and perhaps the quiz.

     So here goes:

Electrical Quiz

So here are the nine choices:

Electrical Quiz

  And the anagram is________________?

Jack----you are KILLING me!  I hope this is not an indication of how much grief I am going to catch later on over this oneYou might want to give it another go----after coffee this time:)  Sorry---only one correct.

I'm a gonna have to reverse engineer this one... hmmm... lets see what I can come up with...

Posted by Klee B. Patel over 3 years ago

Charles, I am going to let the inspectors do the matches here. I can solve an anagram though. But then again if Jack only got one right, you may have proved too tough for your own crowd.

Klee, go for it:)

Gary, I hear you.  It is really difficult to put this sort of thing together and not make them so easy that everyone gets it on the first go.  Somehow I can't figure out how to take my own experience with the information out of the equation:)  I may have to rethink the whole thing.

I'll try 1 is F, 2 is A, 3 is J, 4 is G, and 5 is E but I know its wrong because there is no gram.

Heath, I am afraid you are batting 0 for 5----how many more tries would it take:)

Posted by Charles Buell, Seattle Home Inspector (Charles Buell Inspections.com) over 3 years ago

A and E are likely one of the ones selected as they are both vowels?

He wants us to pick J because he skips I?

any hu... here's my best guess...

"beach" as in life is a beach...

1 is B

2 is E

3 is C

4 is H

5 is A

so there thats the best guess but i barely count as a do it yourself no so handy man

Klee, I like your thinking----you got two correct.

Kara, well done-----you got three correct.

I have gone back and changed the pictures to hopefully clarify things and make it "easier"----although I admit that it is not easy and takes some real thought and process of elimination.  I will do better next time----I promise:)

Posted by Charles Buell, Seattle Home Inspector (Charles Buell Inspections.com) over 3 years ago

Charles, I'm just going to say that you are obviously trying to eliminate the women viewers.  Just as men don't read directions or instructions, women mostly don't do electrical (Kara excepted maybe) puzzles.  : )

Barbara, you may be right----but I would never "publicly" agree with you:)

As a side note:  I forgot to say before that this should be a little easier now as Klee got the anagram right:)

HAHAHAHAH... I got it right!!!! I have a bit of an unfair advantage as I know his sense of humor - sick and childish.  While this may be seen by some as a partial victory I consider it nothing less than a total victory.  This proves again that I am the ruler of my own world... and Nutzys.  speaking of which "Hey Steve if you are looking for your squrell try looking under the front right tire of my car"  Yes I did just go there, but let's not let my jab at all things rabies infested detract from the contest.  hehehehehe....

Good Morning Charles...

Ok -

#1 looks like an old Sylvania breaker, I choose H

#2 The capacitors and knob & tube go with E

#3 could go either way... It could be associated with the older two wire outlet convention (A) or it could be associated with the older style wiring as shown in E

#4 Would have to be C - Ground screw and grounding strap

#5 With the older cloth braid in the junction box and fused panel, and I will have to go with B

So I would guess your answer could either be BEACH or BEECH...

What ever the answer, this is a good puzzle.

Was this quiz writtern by a troll or what? I am pretty sure that it was.

Mr Charles,

I am incarcerated again this weekend. Not charity but for real. I had too many near beers prior to driving to a hot date. I will be out Monday. I have no clue to any of this puzzle, as this is not my area of expertise. However, it is apparent to me, after 10,000 such inspections, that the tension in the wires at photo 3 is not correct. As you know, the official way to measure the tension is "squirrel weight" and these wires are clearly not up to 7 squirrel weight, which is the standard for residential applications. Since I am in captivity this weekend, I have unlimited internet access on my company account. Your incarcerated buddy Nutsy. Feel free to ask my advice on any related matters.

Posted by Steven L. Smith, Bellingham, Wa. Home Inspector (King of the House Home Inspection, Inc) over 3 years ago

Michael, awesome job----you only missed one #3----admittedly the most difficult of them all.  Study the picture REALLY hard and I think you can get the correct answer especially since it is neither of the two you would like:)

Steve---most likely

Nutsy----a few questions for you?  1. How is jail food, 2. How is the jail bed, 3.  Are you used to the clanking of steel bars yet?

Mr Charles,

I meant that I would be happy to enlighten you on inspection issues, not my personal life and preferences. Your annoyed friend Nutsy.

come on come on come on!!!  I can't stand the suspense Charles!!

Posted by Kara Casamassina, "Boomers and beyond..." (The Carolina Real Estate Company) over 3 years ago

Charlie, By looking at the entrance wires, these look like an older 100 amp service entrance. The only panel pictured that resembles a 100 amp box would be G. However; these older wiring conventions are just as unsafe as the Federal Pacific panel J. But I will keep my answer to G...

So my answer is H, E, G, C, B...

Thanks everyone for playing---I have learned a lot about how difficult these types of games are:)

Here are the answers:

1, H----the damaged Zinsco Breaker goes with the Zinsco panel that has a missing breaker.

2, E-----the old batteries for a door bell goes with the transformer for a door bell.

3, B----the old three wire service goes with the old fuse panel.

4, C----the sub-panel with the green bonding screw improperly in place goes with the picture of the panel with bonding strap/screw removed and laying in the bottom of the panel.

5, A----the unused ground wires of the "newer" wiring added to the old ungrounded knob & tube system causes the "induced current" (Phantom Voltage) indicated around the receptacle in picture A.

Charles just what I was going to post.  No seriously, my best guess got 3. It's a holiday weekend what do you want.

I just now found this post. Guess I'm too late.

But the news about Nutsy made it worth coming in anyway.

Question: If a squirell ran across the road in front of your car... would you veer to avoid it?

Posted by KEVIN CORSA H.I.S. Home Inspections Stark & Summit County, OH Home Inspector (H.I.S. Home Inspections (Summit, Stark Counties)) over 3 years ago

Michael, I will do better next time:)

Kevin, while I probably would veer----that would likely only increase the likelihood of hitting it:)

well dang - I was gonna switch the last two - but went another route.  This was alot of fun Charles - I'm looking forward to the next one!    enjoy the rest of your day :)

Got to the party way too late! That was very fun to try to figure out before reading the comments. I only had 3 right though!

When it comes to "getting" Squirrels on the open road I find it best to align the hood ornament with the intended target and swerve wildly down both lanes.  Screaming about how rodents really don't make good inspectors as they always fine ways sabotage deals just as they are about to close. If you approach squirrels like this I find they are totally caught off guard and is likely that they will drop from a heart attack just as you flatten them on the road.  Then it is time for the scrape, peel, and chiseling of said rodent with a spatula.

Posted by Klee B. Patel over 3 years ago

Thanks Kara----perhaps I will work on another one.

Matt, glad you had fun with it anyway.

Klee, so let me get this straight.  You are saying if you "act" like a squirrel with your car you are more likely to have success in hastening its demise?
