I thought I would try a little bit different sort of contest----sorry no prizes----hopefully just a little fun. This is about seeing a picture of something and then identifying which other picture "goes with" that picture the "best." First of all I will present 6 pictures numbered "1" through "6." The next part is to identify which of the pictures lettered "A" through "J" "goes with each of the original pictures.
I know it isn't fair to have three pictures that "don't count"----but don't you want this to be a challenge? Some of the matches are very easy, while a few others I hope will make some of the Rain inspectors scratch the heads for at least a few seconds. I am also fully prepared for a barrage of disagreement and keep in mind that this contest may have very little to do with any "defects" that may or may not be in the pictures----it is simply which ones "belong" together more than any of the others.
So here goes:
Now here are 9 pictures to pick 6 picture from that have the "best relationship" to the first 6 pictures.
So submit your conclusions----and "be prepared" to defend them.

Suzanne, thanks for being so brave to jbe the first to jump into the fire.
You got one correct----I will save giving the correct answers until everyone has had a chance.
Kelly, sorry---I know it is too early---but I have to get going to an inspection----hopefully you will all have had your coffee and have it figured out by the time I get back

Charles, this made me nutso. Okay so maybe I was already nutso, but this was hard. How long do I have to wait. I hate to wait.
Suzanne---that is OK----it is all just fun:)
Alan, I guess that is a little bit like 60% right:)
Tammy, good job---only two wrong. Looks like all the inspectors are too chicken to try:)
Ok Charles I heard that, I was going to wait a little longer, but you call me out on it. So here I go.

I worked on these pics before I read any of the answers and I'm not changing any right now. How bad did I do?
Lizette, only two incorrect:)
#6 is exactly why I'll never be an inspector. Just looking at that picture makes me itchy and a bit creeped out.
Staying tuned for the answers. In the meantime I'm off to find a can of Raid - just in case.
Tracy, they are ONLY carpenter ants:)
Beeman,
If Nutsy and I were not so busy working I would try to play your little game. Got to go.
Raven says:
I guess whenever I visit your blog I should do so early in the morning, after a good workout and a swim, some time in the hot tub, a nice hot shower, breakfast, news, and newspaper. My mind is much too mushy at midnight, especially now that Mr. Eg G. Nog and his new little cutie, Brandy, are here for the holidays. In fact, I have lots of visitors who arrived today for the holidays. I'm lucky I can even get here to Active Rain just to comment some.
1-c 2-b 3-g 4-f 5-h 6-d
or it could be...
Russel, well it is morning:)
Patty, good job---only two wrong:)
Okay Charles I am still waiting... running out of patience, but still waiting.
Tammy, a better question is how long am I going to have to wait for the right answers?:)
Obviously until someone smarter than me studies them for a while.
Tammy, looks like the Inspectors don't want to play. I thought for sure Nutsy would give it a go:)
Charlie, Here goes,
1 C, 2 B, 3 A, 4 F, 5 H, 6 D
Some of your photos are a little tricky, but isn't that the idea.
I'm with Tammy.....she and I both need the immediate gratification. When, Charlie, when?
James, thanks for giving it a go. You got two wrong as well. It seems that the majority is having trouble with 4 and 5. I will come back with the correct answers and why later today. Until then give those two another go. There is a logic to the correct answers but these two are admittedly deceiving:)
Suzanne, hang in there:)
Second go,
1 C, 2 B, 3 A, 4 H, 5 G, 6 D
James---lets see----how many possibilities are there?:) Sorry but 4 and 5 are still messed up.
Charlie, Not to be a poor sport, but them pictures sure are small.
4 is obviously a very old heating system and 5 is an attic with a crummy looking chimney.
E looks like an old oil burner, but in your neck of the woods. Thought you guys don't use oil to heat out there.
Anyway I'm not making the connection.
OK---here is the poop.
1,C-----#1 picture is a fall protection bracket on the outside of the roof while #C is what it looks like inside the attic space.
2,B-----#2 picture is a picture of a roof (with frost on it) and in the foreground you can see the shingles don't look correct where the vent pictured in #B is missing.
3,A-----#3 picture is new construction where they ran out of vents (or it blew away) and picture #4 is where water has been raining on the insulation below the hole.
4,F-----#4 picture is of an old "Octopus furnace (originally coal converted to gas) with its corresponding firebox pictured in #F.
5,E-----#5 picture is the view of a chimney in the attic and all the yellow discoloration is consistent with the chimney being unlined and used with an oil-fired furnace as pictured in #E.
6,D----#6 picture is of Carpenter Ants on the window casing in someones living room and corresponding picture of frass on the ground cover below as pictured in #D.
While some got various ones mixed upt the vast majority had trouble with #4 and #5. I hope this clears up the mud:)
Several thought #5 and #H should go together----I am curious why?
Charlie,
My first guess was 5 out of 6 correct. I had #4 right, but you said it was wrong. I was robbed!!!:( I want a recount.
5 was an interior chimney and so is H. Both pictures show discoloration. 5 is hard to tell any color other than white. H made the most sense to me.
Remember my friend you know the answers and have the benefit of having been there inspecting. It's not always easy to tell from a picture. This is a lesson I have been learning playing picture games with my oldest daughter, she's 7. Kids teach us all sorts of things.
James----I SEE---sorry about that. Man I sure hear you about the difficulty of presenting a picture contest as if I hadn't been there. Almost impossible probably. But anyway I hope everyone just sees this as fun and not any kind of "test":) James---I hope you will do one to get even with me:) Looking at 5 and H being both "interior" chimneys is definately a "compelling" conclusion----I just didn't foresee that:)
Charlie, No need to apologize. It was fun and you know I'm just teasing you:) It's funny how we don't see things from anothers eyes. Which is why it's good to share. We all learn something and that my friend is the best thing of all.
James, I had the same one wrong with the same reasoning as you, so don't feel bad. It was a trick question that Mr. Charles devised to trip us up.. lol.
So are you guys up for an "Electrical" one?
Bring it on Mr. Buell, I'm ready!
Finally I can get some sleep, now that I have answers.
James, I will work on it---may take me awhile I have some meme's and other stuff to catch up on first:)
Tammy, nighty night:)
Charles- I love your blog posts! I do have to agree with James that these pictures don't tell the whole story. "Remember my friend you know the answers and have the benefit of having been there inspecting. It's not always easy to tell from a picture. This is a lesson I have been learning playing picture games with my oldest daughter, she's 7. Kids teach us all sorts of things." Charles as you know we are to use a modern term CSI's when inspecting a home. I fully admit that I missed half of your questions. Let me tell you what I saw from the pictures. I got 1,2 & 6 correct. I answered G to #3 and the correct answer was A. I may have took your rules a bit too literal when you wrote "I am also fully prepared for a barrage of disagreement and keep in mind that this contest may have very little to do with any "defects" that may or may not be in the pictures----it is simply which ones "belong" together more than any of the others."
When I see your answer I can now clearly see that it is insulation. At the time I took your test that picture looked like a Hardi Plank siding on a manufactured home skirting.. I answered G because what I saw was a condition that could be caused because of a missing roof vent. (mold, mildew etc.) even though it looked a lot older than the roofing. Could have been a new roof on an older home? You are tricky like that.
On number 4 I answered E and you listed the correct answer as F. I do see the octpus furnace that is rare at most to see now a days. The answer of F? Looks like a wood stove pipe to me. My answer of F looked to be the closest thing to "belonging together" to this one.
Number 5.... I answered H and your correct answer was E. I see your point. But, after being on my high horse on thinking I answered #4 correctly there was no way I could see this one. I do see that the chimney is capped....meaning there is a gas,oil or some type of fixture being run through this older chimney. My first take was the efflorescence and/or water penetration coming from this ares and showing through to the attic space as seen in #H.
Anyhow those are my reasons. Again Charles, I love your blogg! Have a great Turkey Day!
Scott
Scott, I know---it is very difficult to forsee all the problems with a quiz like this----hope you had fun with it anyway:) I will be working on another one for late today.
