Seattle Home Inspector's Blog

Another striking example!

For some reason this defect at a door lock-set reminded me of that movie Airplane (can no longer remember which one) and the play on the word “striker,” where the word was not only some guys name but also what was done to one of the stewardesses.  In a similar way this Strike bolt, struck me as kind of funny----even though no stewardesses got hurt and no little kids had to see Peter Graves naked.

Striker

It does make me want to strike myself in the head though.

I bet they've wondered for years why this door is so hard to work!

Posted by Michael J. O'Connor, MBA, CDPE (Diamond Ridge Realty) 4 months ago

Now here is someone that should probably keep on renting! lol  I supose the door stayed shut and that was all that mattered!

Posted by Vern Eaton /Realtor 651-630-6995 (WHISPERING PINES REALTY) 4 months ago

Michael---new construction:)

Vern, see my comment to Michael, but I think you are right about it being all that mattered.

This also reminds me of the movie "Sideways"

Kate----or at least sideways :)

Charles - this photo made me laugh out loud!!!  Un-bee-freakin'-leavable!

That striker is way wrong! Did it even work? By the way, here are some funny clips from the movie Airplane that you referenced in your post today! Enjoy!

Posted by Craig Rutman North Carolina (Raleigh Area) Realtor (Home Buyer and Seller Specialist) 4 months ago

Alan, it is kind of funny

Craig, thanks for the addition----these movies were very funny.  The strike bolt worked as long as you turned the handle to both open it and close it.

Charles, if I didn't know you to be such a straight guy, I'd think you photo-shopped this stuff. But, it's more like you can't make this stuff up. Reality bites.

Posted by Frank Kliewer (Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Executive) 4 months ago

Frank, I have to admit my imagination pales in relation to the stuff I find:)

That's hilarious!  I'd pay money to talk to the owners :)

Charles - Door hardware has always seemed like a work of genius to me!  How anyone can install it and make it work seems miraculous to me:-)

Too funny!!! Some folks just seem to take a bassackwards approach to things don't they...

Charlie,

That and the original Naked Gun movie were very funny

I get it.  That door was upside down!

Charles, You and Steven are so lucky to have an endless supply of story lines from each inspection...

Posted by Paul Henderson, Realtor ® Lacey, DuPont or Hartstene Pointe WA. (RE/MAX Professionals & Four Seasons Inc.) 4 months ago

Josh it would be interesting to know what it was like to live with the door like this

Myrl, some of it is more mysterious than others:)

Michael, it is for sure hard to figure out sometimes

Steve, yup

Jay---I didn't think anyone would figure it out

Paul, for sure inspectors have it easy----as long as they don't get bored with having too many opportunities:)

Posted by Charles Buell, Seattle, WA, Home Inspector (Charles Buell Inspections.com) 4 months ago

Charles - Maybe the lock is for one of those out of adjustment doors that must be lifted to close.

John, I have done serious damage to my brain attempting to make this thing "logical":)

Posted by Charles Buell, Seattle, WA, Home Inspector (Charles Buell Inspections.com) 4 months ago
So what's wrong with the door knob? Other than it is not a knob? I have been seeing the lever type openers and you have to pull them UP to open them and close them. You can get to one of those things and wrestle for the longest and when you call the listing agent and say the door will not work, she'll say, "Pull up on the lever."

As a young kid with a decent sense of humor, Peter Graves naked held all the potential in the world. That written, this post is a prime example of why a guy like me is meant for anything other than the mechanical side of things. Criminity Shit-Cakes, give me a hammer and I'll foresake the nail. I believe God is Just, though. With cases like this, I still have the ability to scale the house and get in the window ... and call you in the morning ... after the aspirin and Green Tea kick in.
Posted by Jason Sardi, Pretty Fly for an Allentown Guy (None needed;)) 4 months ago

Charles ....

How in the world did that get turned that way around? Sure will make it hard to close the door.

Posted by Richard Weisser Coweta Fayette Real Estate 4 months ago

Charles, you have me wondering if the handle really works or is it there only for show?  Does anyone use the door for access?

Posted by Lora "Leah" Stern, Realtor Rockland County Real Estate (Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage) 4 months ago

Barbara, you are too funny:)

Jason, are you sure you are not going to need something a little stronger than green tea/

Richard---it was broken for sure.

Posted by Charles Buell, Seattle, WA, Home Inspector (Charles Buell Inspections.com) 4 months ago

Lora, oh it "worked"----just not the way it is supposed to.  It was the door between the house and the garage so it had to of been used quite a bit.

Posted by Charles Buell, Seattle, WA, Home Inspector (Charles Buell Inspections.com) 4 months ago

Charles, I would have to wonder about the rest of the house on this new construction!

Posted by Tony Cannon, e-PRO & Darcy Cannon, SFR - The C Team (ERA Realty Center) 4 months ago

Thats just weird Charles,  I can't figure out how or why the striker components would rotate 90 degrees.  I have NEVER seen anything like it.

Posted by Jim Allhiser Salem, Oregon Home Inspector (Perfection Inspection, Inc.) 4 months ago
Someone had to have altered the striker. The holes inside just don't line up otherwise. Too funny. It must hae been a lot of work for some "new guy" on the job.
Posted by Glenn Roberts - Seattle Residential (Lake & Company Real Estate) 4 months ago

Mr Charles,

I find it amusing that a publicly proclaimed nudist such as yourself would be critical of Peter Graves in the buff.

Nutsy

Posted by Steven L. Smith, Bellingham, Wa. Home Inspector (King of the House Home Inspection, Inc) 4 months ago

You'd think someone would have wanted this fixed before now! LOL

Debi

Posted by Debi Boucher - "Realtor Showcase" Real Estate Photography/Virtual Tours ( Real Estate Showcase Photography) 4 months ago

Tony and Darcy---it was otherwise pretty well done----this was kind of a fluke in that house really

Jim, it was broken internally and allowed it to rotate around and around

Glenn, see my comment to Jim

Nutsy, I am the ONLY man I can stand seeing naked :)

Debi, one would think so.  The only saving grace was that this was new construction so the only ones that really had to put up with it were workers----and they most likely just propped the door open most of the time.

Posted by Charles Buell, Seattle, WA, Home Inspector (Charles Buell Inspections.com) 4 months ago

That looks like some of my Brother-in-laws work.  I actually like the look of the hardware on the door.

Posted by Gene Riemenschneider East Contra Costa Home Sales 01492725 (Home Point Real Estate) 4 months ago

Gene, well except for the "messed up part" the hardware in this house was pretty good.
