At a recent inspection when I was looking across the roof from a porch roof I could see a strange bump with some discoloration around it----just to the right of the chimney near the top. Can you see it? Any guesses as to what it might be? Well if you were strange enough to guess the “vent cap” for the kitchen exhaust fan you would be correct. If not, well I guess you could not have made it up either. Charles Buell

Wow - that is not a pretty site. How in the world does that happen???
That's pretty funny. I walk into houses sometimes and wonder...what were they thinking? I walked into foreclosure the other day and the previous owner had tried to put up what he must have thought was crown molding in the living room. It was actually the base boards from the kitchen floor. LOL
I was in an REO the other day that was painted to resemble the Muppets Theater at Disney's Hollywood Studios! Unfortunatley, it was designed to resemble the END of the show (after the damage) and not the beginning! INTENTIONALLY. Nate, I'll give you the address if you can stomach it.
Paula, I can't even make up a reason for the reason:)
Nathan---people seem to like to find "other" uses for moldings than for what they were originally intended.
Rebecca, murals on house interior walls is a big "commitment":)
Good grief! The 'stuff' you find, Charles! Do you ever get to inspect a home that doesn't have something weird? LOL
Debi
Ginevra, are you thinking this would be a good place for the squirrels to live?
Debi, well given that we are all just a little "off," the chances are great that every house will have something that is a little "off." :) Pretty rare to have things this "off" though. LOL
Was that "hole" actually visible or did you just see a bump and investigate - that's well weird... :)
Ok, I guess it's too late and I see that you did see a bump!!! I better go to sleep :)
Yikes! Hmmm, someone graduated from the Sardi School of Home Renovation. Do it to it!!! :)
Charlie B, are you sure that this is not the entrance to Nutsy's hidie hole???

Roof pimple. Happens all the time. They need to wash the roof more frequently.
That pine tree beside the house is an Eastern Pine, which many decades ago was the state tree of PA. How'd it get out there? That looks like a VA mortar-free chimney, and I love the flashing! Those vent extensions look like they've been there a while and will probably survive the nuclear war (or even the tsunami apparently still coming your way). And I love the big one which bisects the roof twice! And flashing them with roof tar should last, well, a long time (;~ )
I need to point that gutter installation out to Billy Jays! He would try to sell it. Super design!
With the holes in that kitchen vent discharge tube you have to wonder how many times they have had to replace the blower over the weeks of its life span...
Thanks for posting. We learn a lot from Active Rain blogs. Best Regards
Nutsy
Nice job on that installation! Can't believe the homeowners didn't notice a little water come from the kitchen ceiling.
Awesome photo - I had to share this masterpiece of roofing with some friends in the roofing trade. And Rebecca, didn't you take any pictures of the Muppet Theatre mural to share with us? I imagine the MLS listing for that REO didn't include any photos of that!
Rita, LOL, you can wake up now.
Jason, I believe you might have been able to "make that up" but I don't think you would do it:)
Michael---I am sure it is----well it is nutsy anyway
Jay, there were lots of issues on the roof for sure---but nothing a few more cans of tar wouldn't fix
Nutsy, you are welcome---I learn nothing from you
Tom, that surprised me as well----but the way it was tarred they most likely did in the past
Gordon---I bet it will get a few chuckles :)
Charles - At least you should give them a "C" for creativity.
John, I think that might be a stretch:)
So you don't see that on the HGTV now do ya? What in the world, I can only imagine what they would do to install a "skylight."
Diane, there were two of them and they did a MUCH better job with those :)

That's hilarious. I once inspected a new construction townhome where they had done the same thing.
Reuben, well your seeing it way over there in Minneapolis land will have special meaning when you read tomorrow's post to my blog :)
I found one of these hidden gems once, but it was only through infrared that it was noticeable. A little red circle under the last of three layers of shingles. Nice find.
Rich
Charlie - That's outrageous! I bet you were up on that rooftop all by yourself chuckling really really loud while the buyers were thinking you were crazed!
Rich, it shows to go that you can only see what you can see.
Carol, my buyers were in California this time---but they might have heard me anyway :)
