While the following picture of a defect may constitute “trying” to do something---it is actually accomplishing very little. Most attempts at “trying” to do something rarely accomplishes as much as simply “doing” something. Also, 50% of nothing is still nothing, this pipe will need a proper flashing to keep all water out of the house structure. Charles Buell

That's a great picture. That weekend warrior needs to retire!
its amazing how some peopel think things are acceptable & fixed
Charles - Is that decking I see at the lower side of the vent? Doesn't look like too much of a solution to me.
Aaron---absolutely no doubt about it:)
Ken----yes and they thought so 3 times on this roof:)
John, yes it is
And might I also ask what kind of vent doesn't need a cap over it also? This could be only 10% of nothing?!
Never saw that fix before. Very inventive.
Tammy, plumbing vents like this usually do not have caps as the small amount of rain that would enter the pipe would simply drain away. It does need a flashing around it to keep water out of the roof however:)
Glen, I am not sure whether this was something temporary because they ran out of pipe flashings or whether they though this would be a solution. There were three like this on this roof.
Charles - What was the purpose of that piece of flashing? Decoration?
Debi
Charlie,
You are being vindictive again. I hope you were on better behavior this week at BTC.
It looks like a case of doing something, planning to get back up there to finish it, and never getting around to it. The result in the rainy NW is roof damage, however. There are some things you should just leave to a professional.
This installation needs to be given da boot...
Another beauty!
That picture clearly illustrates why I'm so adamant about my buyers having a professional home inspection.
You should write a book, Classic Flashing Techniques =)
Your friend in Washington State,
Paul
You could improve your attitude and not see the plumbing penetration hole as half empty, but half full...
I did a post on a vent very similar to yours. In mine they just didn't bother with that silly old flashing instead they slopped lots of roofing tar all around that pipe. I must say yours is much more attractive.
I can just imagine the mess inside the attic. Did the water make it through the ceiling?
C'mon Charles, nothing like a good ole bucket of tar and a bag of granules can't take care of. LOL........
~ Life is Good ~
Debi, all it really does is deflect water around the hole a little
Steve, BTC?
Marcy, I agree that this was most likely originally meant to be temporary----but turned into a couple of years:)
Michael----for sure
Gregory, yup
Craig---no shortage of reasons are there :)
Paul----too painful:)
Jay, I will stick with "messed up"
James, this one could benefit from a little tar
Frank there were stains all around this vent at the interior
Roy and a lifetime of maintenace
Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. Wonder what Mike Holmes would say about that? Do you know of Mike. His show got picked up in the U.S. Holmes on Homes. He would have nothing nice to say about this.
Oh dear... that is a funny picture :)
Charles, I just met a client today for the first time who showed me around the house and pointed out item after item that she got at a bargain...but actually hates. Same principle as in your photo: 50% off something you hate is NOT a good deal! Sometimes, people, you need to pay for the good stuff and the good people. I love your blog, Charles; you've always got something worthwhile to say. -- Tanya in Montreal
Jenny, no I had never heard of him----will check it out.
Shoshana----laughter is the best medicine
Tanya, thanks for your kind words
Hi Charles, I am very grateful that your photo was not of my home. Sadly it was someones. Hope it doesn't rain before they fix it. :-)
William, AR is being a little wonkie tonight and posted your comment twice so I deleted one of them. In this case it had been raining in for a couple of years:)
That's just laugh out loud funny.
There is a movie quote somewhere, "50% of the time it's works, everytime."
Reuben, when I walked over the roof and came to this, I just shook my head:)
Troy----sounds like a Yogi Berra
Charlie - Seems to be common sense ...but I am sure the homeowner never got on the roof to check the work of the contractor. Do they ever? Maybe it was a DIY job.
Carol, I am pretty sure it was---and they perhaps never got around to putting the "real thing" on there.
