“Breaker-Breaker-1/5”

Little Billy Breaker was 15 and had a job.

     Quite a simple job.

     A total “trip” really.

A perfect job for a teen like him.

All he had to do was sit there.  Whenever someone sent too much stuff his way, it was his job to just shut the line down----giving everyone working along the line a chance to catch up and for things to cool off a bit.

For a whole week----seven days in a row----he did his job, just like he was supposed to do----shutting everything down perfectly----and still----everyone was mad him. sadface

In fact it seemed to him that the better he did his job the madder everyone got.

They would just come right up to him, get right in his face and make him get back to work.

This confused Billy to no end.

He could not understand.  If it was his “job” to shut things down, then why wouldn’t anyone let him do his job?

One day, he came to work and found that he had been replaced----no notice or anything----with a bigger, version of himself ----this replacement was 30, “at least”----and totally full of himself.

     Well, this was not good.

No one bigger than he could do his job as good as he could---he was sure of it.   He knew that when it came to his particular job---bigger was certainly not better.

Changing the job description would surely result in disaster.

     WHAT IS THAT SMELL?

     Do you smell it too?

Billy's protests fell on deaf ears as he asked, “Don’t you guys remember when the same thing happened to Frankie Fuse?”

Good post...had me wondering what the "job" was! Sometimes bigger is not the answer...including budgets!

Feeding Billy Frankie a mini glass doorknob was such a nuisance.  But even Billy takes a lot of guff. Are you saying Billy should remain a teen? Isn't there a right way to upgrade him to 30 something?

Today, just l-e-a-r-n about the meth lab or you'll be cracking up Nutsy from a cell.

Great analogy, Charles! Poor little Billy - Well done!

Have a nice trip?  See you next, um, overload...

At least they solved that tripping problem.  Out of the pan and into the fire!

Charlie - I had never seen a meth lab, though I have read where other inspectors have come up against them regularly.  I would not know what to look for, so I asked a policeman once on a home inspection and he gave me a brief, yet thorough, lesson!

I forgot about little Billy Breaker until you mentioned Frankie Fuse =)

Funny how sometimes people love to fix a problem by not fixing it. Temporary solutions can have long term consequences if your not careful. Great story!

The people who own the house with the breaker panel I post about a few weeks ago wanted to know if I would put in a bigger breaker so it wouldn't constantly trip. I think I'll just show them this post.

Mr Charles,

I had been asked to give that training, with my background in the field, however I am in Canada.

Poor poor Billy Breaker.

Freddie Fuse suffered the same fate.

But it was Cecily Circuit who caused the whole house to burn down!

Barbara, thanks----and congratulations on your feature today:)
Gary---in this case for sure
Mike, thanks for the comment
Kate, in this case----not easily to upgrade without totally rewiring poor Billy
Debi, thanks----it was a bit of fun:)
Jay, I think I am having a melt down---the meth lab stuff was pretty interesting---learned some good stuff about identification and just general information
Paul, Frankie Fuse has some issues in the heat of the moment
Troy, thanks----"short" cuts in electricity are generally not good
Suesan---sounds like a good idea
Nutsy, was that "experience in the field" digging up peoples flower bulbs?
Craig, are you sure it was not Willie Wire?

And don't drink from the coke bottles with tubes in them:)

I think Billy Breaker was just afraid he was going to get hot under the collar.  The thirty something knows how to take the heat while Willey Wire roasts everything in sight.

Jay, yup

Alan, haven't you heard about the new combo b'bque/fuse panel?

Posted by Charles Buell, Seattle Home Inspector (Charles Buell Inspections.com) over 2 years ago

Amazing how common this is.  Just ran into a 30 amp breaker with 14 gauge wire last week. The hous was unoccupied but still scary as he**!

David, one CAN get lucky I guess:)

Hey David this is perhaps the worst I have found---two single pole 90's.  The bottom one has #12 on it and the top one has #14 :)

WAY over fused wires

I swear I smell something burning

Mr Charles,

As I understand it, the problem with the above photo would be that the insulation is not red enough. Is that correct. Perhaps my scarlet uniform will makeup for that.
